Expert-led, AI-powered blood film morphology training and competency for laboratory professionals.

HemoEdge is an AI-powered, whole slide image (WSI)-based education platform being developed, with consultant haematologists, laboratory scientists, and educators, to improve how blood cell morphology is taught, learned, and assessed in haematology and diagnostic laboratory settings.

It is not being developed as an examination preparation product for medical doctors. Its focus is the practical training and competency support needs of laboratory professionals involved in blood film morphology.

Through annotated WSIs, real case-based learning, expert-reviewed content, morphology quizzes, competency pathways and an AI tutor, HemoEdge helps users build confidence and consistency in blood film morphology.

A growing digital morphology library built for serious training

HemoEdge is being developed around a structured, image-rich learning library designed to support practical learning, repeated exposure, and competency development. Learners will be able to study annotated cell images, explore illustrated morphology features, work through guided teaching modules and practise interpretation using WSI-based cases. Each asset is intended to support a clear learning purpose, from feature recognition to case-based reasoning and competency development.

WSI Cases

/ The Problem

Blood film morphology training remains highly variable.

Current reality

Access

Limited case exposure

Learners often have limited exposure to a wide range of blood film appearances, especially rare or diagnostically important findings. HemoEdge helps widen access by providing structured, image-rich exposure to annotated morphology examples and WSI-based cases.

Teaching

Variable bench support

Morphology teaching often depends on senior staff availability, local expertise and the cases present in the laboratory at the time. HemoEdge supports more consistent training by combining guided annotations, expert-reviewed explanations and case-based learning that learners can revisit repeatedly.

Competency and Progress

Hard to measure readiness

It can be difficult to know when a learner is genuinely ready to progress from observation to confident interpretation. HemoEdge makes progress more visible through quizzes, competency checkpoints, weak-area tracking and structured learning pathways.

/ How It Works

Structured learning from image recognition to case interpretation.

01

Study the morphology library

Explore a structured library of normal and abnormal blood cell features, with annotated images, clear explanations, common diagnostic associations and key points to help learners recognise what they are seeing.

02

Work through guided cases

Review WSI-based blood film cases with clinical context, FBC and other laboratory results, guided annotations and interpretation prompts, helping learners move from identifying individual features to understanding the full case.

03

Ask the AI Tutor, assess and track progress

Use the AI Tutor to clarify difficult features, explain case findings and guide revision from approved HemoEdge content. Then test recognition and interpretation through quizzes and competency checkpoints, while tracking scores, completed modules and weak areas so learners know exactly where to focus next.

/ Everything you need

From morphology fundamentals to complex case interpretation — all in one place.

Everything you need to report a film with confidence.

01

Annotated morphology library

A searchable library, organised by lineage and feature

Normal and abnormal morphology, organised by cell lineage, features, and diagnostic associations. Each entry can include a definition, representative image examples, linked WSI cases, differential considerations and an explanation of clinical relevance.

02

Whole-slide case learning

Examine digital blood film cases the way you would at the bench

Review WSI-based blood film cases with zoomable slide viewing, clinical context, FBC results, guided annotations and points of interest. This helps learners move beyond isolated images and practise interpreting morphology within the wider case context.

03

Teaching mode and Explore mode

Teaching (guided) mode provides annotations, hints and explanations. Explore mode hides labels and prompts learners to identify features, interpret findings and select likely differentials independently.

04

Quiz, Assessment and Manual WBC differential engine

Multiple question formats: identify the cell or feature, select the most likely diagnosis, match morphology to syndrome, perform a manual differential, interpret the film and write short case interpretations.

05

Progress dashboard

Monitor development across core morphology areas

Track completed modules, quiz performance, weak feature areas and recommended next steps in one clear dashboard. HemoEdge helps learners see where they are improving, where they need more practice and how close they are to reaching the next competency level.

Institutional reporting

For laboratory leads, training officers and educators — visibility across cohorts and teams for programmes that need a more standardised approach to morphology training.

From early users and pilot partners

Built with feedback from the people who teach and practise morphology

““HemoEdge gives learners a more structured way to see morphology cases beyond what happens to appear on the bench. The combination of annotated images, guided cases and progress tracking could make training more consistent across a team.””

DP

Dr Amina Patel

Early pilot reviewer (Consultant Haematologist) · Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

““The case-based format feels much closer to how morphology is actually taught in practice. Learners are not just memorising isolated cells, they are being guided to interpret findings in context.””

JO

James Okonkwo

Early user feedback (Senior Biomedical Scientist) · Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

““The ability to combine WSI cases, quizzes, competency checkpoints and AI-supported explanations makes HemoEdge feel purpose-built for laboratory education rather than generic e-learning.””
